There are many benefits to becoming a certified teacher in Maryland — like high quality teaching environments, competitive salaries, and excellent benefit packages (to name a few).

Whether you are a conditionally certified teacher or looking to change careers, there are multiple steps you need to take to navigate the certification process and become a teacher in Maryland.

We know this process can be confusing and, at times, downright daunting. To help you successfully navigate the teacher certification process in Maryland, this blog post covers what you need to know — including how Moreland University can help you become a certified teacher in Maryland.

8 steps to become a certified teacher in Maryland

1. Understand the requirements

Whether you are looking to change careers or are a conditionally certified teacher, the first step in becoming a certified teacher is to understand the requirements for certification. In Maryland, teachers are required to hold a bachelor’s degree and complete an approved teacher preparation program like those offered at Moreland University

You’ll also need to pass the Praxis exams in your subject area and complete a background check that includes fingerprinting. To maintain your certification, Maryland also requires teachers to participate in ongoing professional development.

The specific requirements for teacher certification in Maryland can vary based on the type of certification and the grade level or subject area you intend to teach. Don’t worry! This isn’t as confusing as it seems. If you need help finding out which requirements are unique to your career path or want to talk through your specific plan for teacher certification success, schedule a no-obligation conversation with a Moreland University admissions representative

2. Earn a bachelor’s degree

To become a teacher in Maryland, you need a U.S. four-year bachelor’s degree (though there are some exceptions for agricultural, career, and technical education fields). Those with an international degree who are unsure if it’s equivalent to a U.S. four-year bachelor’s degree can order an independent review from a transcript evaluation agency

Your bachelor’s degree does not have to be in education, but those with and those without a bachelor’s degree in education have differing journeys to become a certified teacher.

If your bachelor’s degree is in education, you can skip ahead to step six. If your bachelor’s degree is not in education, you’ll have a few additional steps to certification — which we’ve outlined below.

3. Choose a certification preparation program

Next, you’ll need to choose an approved teacher preparation program. Moreland University offers several 100% online program options for aspiring teachers, including a nine-month TEACH-NOW certification preparation program and a Master’s in Education with teaching credential with six specializations options to help take your career forward. These are proven, flexible, and affordable teaching programs designed to meet the various needs of students. If you’re unsure which Moreland University accredited program is right for you, our admissions representatives can help you decide

4. Apply to the program

Once you have chosen a program, the next step is to apply. The application process will vary depending on the institution and program, but generally, you will need to submit transcripts, test scores, and letters of recommendation. You may also need to complete an interview or submit a personal statement. Be sure to check the application deadlines and requirements for the program you are interested in. Applying to Moreland University is easy and only takes 10-15 minutes to complete

5. Complete the program

The next step is to actually complete the program. This involves taking courses, completing coursework, and participating in student teaching. Moreland University’s programs are designed to provide you with the knowledge and skills you need to be an effective teacher, so be sure to take advantage of all the opportunities available to you.

A word of advice: Not all programs are as flexible as others, especially if you are attending an institution in-person. Flexible start dates, small cohorts, and faculty composed of practicing teachers (all offered at Moreland University) helps ensure you can successfully complete the program.

6. Pass the Praxis exams

After completing your program, you will need to pass the Praxis exams in your subject area. These exams are designed to test your knowledge and skills in your subject area and are required for certification in Maryland. Be sure to study and prepare thoroughly for your exams, as they are a critical component of the certification process.

7. Complete a background check

A standard requirement for U.S. teaching jobs (including teaching jobs in Maryland) is to complete a criminal background check. This process includes fingerprinting.

8. Apply for teaching certification

Once you have completed the above requirements, the final step is to apply for certification with the Maryland State Department of Education. You will need to submit your transcripts, test scores, and background check results. You will also need to pay a fee. Once your application is approved (which can take up to eight weeks), you will be issued a certificate that allows you to teach in Maryland.

By following the step-by-step action plan outlined in this blog post, you can navigate the process successfully and begin your career as a certified teacher in Maryland.
