Curious about what it takes to become a certified teacher in Missouri?

General Requirements
Missouri requires educators to have a minimum of a bachelor’s degree. That degree does not necessarily have to be in education.

Testing Requirements
You'll take Praxis exams based on your grade level and subject area to demonstrate content knowledge and instructional competency.

Teacher Education Requirements
If your bachelor’s degree is in something other than education, you could earn your certification through an alternative EPP, such as Moreland’s TEACH-NOW program.

Moreland’s TEACH-NOW program is fully accredited and 100% online, with small, diverse classes, dedicated mentors, and clinical learning (student teaching) included.

Strong Demand for Teachers
Missouri is projecting 3% growth in jobs for elementary, middle, and secondary school teachers by 2032. That equals 4,500 open jobs every year.1

A Mandated Minimum Wage
Missouri legislators raised the minimum teacher salary from $25,000 to $40,000, effective in 2025. Teachers in the state are encouraged and are advocating for even more support.2

Stability for State Programs
Missouri ranks 11th in the nation for fiscal stability. When states are fiscally stable, their educational programs have a better chance of success.3

Low Student-to-Teacher Ratio
The student-to-teacher ratio in Missouri is 13:1, compared to the national average of 15- or 16:1. This provides teachers with more time to connect with individual learners.4

Diverse Student Population
There are more than 890,000 public school students in Missouri, giving educators in the state an excellent opportunity to help students from a variety of backgrounds.4

Incredible Outdoor Recreation
With 57 state parks and 36 historic sites across the state, Missouri teachers can hike, camp, and take in the beauty of nature all around them.5
