Exams can be nerve-wracking for anyone, especially teacher certification tests that play such a pivotal role in determining whether you can successfully earn a teaching license in your desired subject, grade, and state.

Whether you are a current or aspiring teacher, you know the importance of test preparation — and that being prepared is vital to succeeding in your teacher certification exams. Ensuring you are fully prepared the day before your teacher certification tests can help you enter your exam session with confidence. Whether you’re taking an exam in person or online, keep the following tips in mind to help you prep and perform to the best of your ability.

Confirm the Test Details

Verify the Test Date, Time, and Location

Confirming the details of your exam is a must. Make sure you know the exact date, time, and location of your test. For online exams, ensure you have the correct login details and know the platform where the test will be conducted.

This may seem obvious, but it is surprisingly easy to overlook these details when you’re busy studying, which can lead to unnecessary stress on test day.

Print Your Admission Ticket or Confirmation Email

For in-person exams, print your admission ticket or confirmation email well in advance. This document often contains essential information and is usually required for entry into the test center. It can be convenient to keep it with the other materials you will take with you on the day of your exam.

For online exams, keep your confirmation email readily accessible, as it often contains login details and technical support information.

Review Test Center Policies

Familiarize yourself with the test center’s policies regarding permitted items. This includes identification requirements and what materials you can bring. For online exams, review the testing platform’s guidelines, including rules about your testing environment and what is visible in your workspace.

Gather Required Items

Ensure you have all the necessary items ready for your test day organized and in a central location beforehand. For in-person exams, this typically includes:

  • A valid photo ID such as a driver’s license, passport, or other government-issued ID
  • An admission ticket or confirmation email
  • Any other required documentation specified by the test center

For online exams, make sure your ID is ready to present to the proctor via webcam and that any other required documents are within arm’s reach.

Prepare Supplies

Having the right supplies can make a significant difference in your test-taking experience. For in-person exams, considering packing:

  • Several #2 pencils (Some centers may provide pencils, but it’s best to have your own ready!)
  • An approved calculator, if your test allows it
  • A watch to keep track of time (Bonus tip: Avoid smartwatches or digital watches with alarms, as they may not be permitted.)

For online exams, ensure your computer and internet connection are reliable. Have a backup plan in case of technical issues, such as a secondary device or an alternative internet source like a Wi-Fi hotspot that can be enabled from a cell phone.

Plan Your Route to Ensure a Smooth Journey to the Test Center

For in-person test takers, knowing how to get to the test center is another essential test prep item that can be easily overlooked. Check traffic conditions or public transportation schedules in advance. Aim to arrive at least 30 minutes early to account for any unforeseen delays.

For online exams, set up your testing environment at least 30 minutes before the start time to troubleshoot any potential issues. Ensure your computer or other device is charged and that you have charging cables nearby, should you need them.
